Notes for THOMAS HARMANSON:
He arrived in Northamption Co., VA before 1665, when
William Andrews gave 1000 A to Joan and her husband Thomas Harmanson.
(Whitelaw p 206). He was naturalized in 1684. Thomas was married
1st to Susan MUMMS (daughter of William MUMMS) and 3rd to Elizabeth DANIEL
(daughter of John DANIEL). He signed a will on 26 Mar 1696 in Northamption Co.,
VA. The will was probated on 28 Nov 1702 (Marshall p 112) The will
was witness by: Thomas Shepherd, Sr., William Shepherd, Argoll Wilkins,
Nathaniel Littleton, William Waters, and Mathew Moore.
A Codicil was written on 19 Oct 1700. It was
witness by Joseph Bath, Stephen Harnage, and William Waters. The will

acres of land to James Jones in 1734. (Essex Co., VA Deed Bk. 21, p. 35).
This land was described as being the land whereon this John PAGE lived and
"which Thomas BRYAN....died Seized off" and bordered the land called
"Savages plantation" also
owned by John PAGE and it names the persons who
owned land adjoining this land.
A month later, John PAGE sold another 110 acres
of land which bordered the above land and lay on the branches of Piscataway
Creek. (Essex Co.,VA Deed Bk. 21, p. 52)
No more records of this John PAGE have been found in
Essex Co., VA so he may have returned to NC.
The inscription on tomb of THOMAS BARKER in the
Johnston Family Cemetery at Hayes Plantation, Edenton, Chowan Co.
NC.
"To the memory of THOMAS BARKER, Esq. of
Edenton Counsellor at law who departed this life 10 December 1789 in the 75th
year of his life. Near him lies his wife Penelope who was President of
the Edenton Tea Party 1774."
Thomas was a native of MA. After the death
of his first wife, Ferebee Savage Pugh Barker, he married Penelope Hodgson
Craven. Their home was located on S. Broad Street. In 1952 the
house was in danger of being razed and was purchased by Mr. Haywood Phthisic
and presented to the town for a community house. It is now located on the
edge of beautiful Albemarle Sound, restored and in use.
Thomas "had a long & brilliant career in
colonial government and finally
became London agent for the Colony about 10 years
before the Revolution."
